In 1898 the Freemasons, formed in Coromandel in July 1872, decided to build their own hall - a wooden, single story building with a classic column porch. The lodge cost 100 pounds on a site bought for 35 pounds. It was consecrated an Lodge 17 if the Grand Lodgwe of New Zealand on 19 October 1899. The building is now a Catergory II with the N.Z. Historic Places Trust.
