Although the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge provides many opportunities for viewing wildlife, the bird watching platform located at the Concord Unit is arguably the most popular bird watching destination in the refuge. This observation platform, located just behind two small lakes, provides bird watching opportunities that are considered by some to be among the best in Massachusetts.
During the summer months, the lakes near the observation platform drain into the nearby Concord River, and the resulting mud flats serve as an ideal feeding ground for a wide variety of shore birds and waterfowl that migrate to the area in late summer.
Commonly observed species include sandpipers, killdeer, lesser and greater yellowlegs, great egrets, great blue herons, mallards, black ducks, wood ducks, blue-winged teal, and Canada geese.
A small parking area and restrooms are available near the observation platform.
