The Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, covering approximately 3,600 acres along the Concord and Sudbury Rivers, is a bird watcher's paradise. A popular tourist destination, the refuge consists of two major "units" - the Sudbury Unit (located along the Sudbury River in Sudbury MA), and the Concord Unit (located along the Concord River in Concord, some 6 miles further north). Nearly 85 percent of the refuge is made up of wetlands.
The Concord Unit of the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge features a bird watching platform / observation deck that provides excellent views of the seasonal mudflats that lie just to the south of the Concord River. There is a small parking area and rest rooms near the observation platform, and trailheads for several small trails.
The Concord Unit can reached from Monsen Road (off of Route 62), just to the east of Concord center.
