Prior to being known as Ophir, this gold mining community from the 1860s was know as Blacks. It is reflected in the naming of Black's Hotel which was built in the 1950s.

A typical small town hotel and tavern that dot rural New Zealand. Many that were built during the 1950s reflected the Art Deco style that was popular in both commercial and residential buildings of the time.
