On 18th July 1955 Upwey had light rain, but over Blackdown near(Hardy's Monument) the rain was torrential.
The water heading for Upwey swept along the valley and the flood charged right into the church. You can see the level the water reached if you look at the pews. The bottom 10 inches (25 cm) or so are a little paler than the rest because the silt and water inside the church lightened the polished wood.
