The Ophir Post & Telegraph Office indicates the importance that this community had on the local region during the gold rush period. As the Otago Central Railway branch line pushed through the region it bypassed Ophir shifting business away.

The Ophir Post & Telegraph Office continues to operate as a post office and is owned by the New Zealand Heritage Places Trust. It indicates the importance that this community had during the 1870s and 80s. However, when the railway came through the valley it bypassed Ophir by two kilometers stopping at Omakau instead. Gradually Ophir's importance as a regional centre dwindled, however the solid built Post & Telegraph building stands as a reminder to the past. (
