Congress hall was built in 1816 and originally named "The Big House." After the owner Thomas H. Hughes became elected to Congress he renamed it Congress Hall. A 38 acre fire took the hotel in 1878, but it was quickly rebuilt with brick and was successful once again. This hotel has been so popular that presidents such as Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin Pierce, and James Buchanan all stayed here. Benjamin Harrison conducted business from his room here in the summer. Even John Phillip Sousa stayed here with his marching band a created "The Congress Hall March."
