" Founded in 1856 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, First Baptist Church has been at the present location since 1871. The present building was dedicated in 1924, with periodic remodeling to keep up with the needs of the congregation. In 1998, a Strategic Planning Committee was established to develop a strategic plan for the new century. The congregation unanimously approved the committee’s recommendation to remain in and minister to the downtown location.
There are two services Sunday mornings: the 8:30 a.m. service is contemporary, and the 11:00 service is traditional. The two services meet the needs of the congregation, with Pastor David Bender ably serving as Interim Pastor until July 2009. In July, Pastor Goldade will take over pastoral duties from First Baptist Church. Wednesday evenings the “Wings” program ministers to scores of children from both neighborhood families and church families.
Church members have hearts for missions, participating in various foreign missions projects that help the impoverished and in local projects, such as distributing Thanksgiving baskets for local families in need. Members work in our food pantry and volunteer at various community outreach programs as well.
First Baptist Church has a slogan that accurately sums up the spirit of the church: “Come Feel the Love of God Here.”
