The following information comes from the Library website. In 1919, the Draper Self-Culture Club established a reading room in Dayton and set a goal of obtaining a Library for the town. By 1935 the Club had bought a lot and had part of the funding for a building. In a deal with the City the Club gave the City the funds and property and the city began the construction of the Library. The Dayton Memorial Library was built as a Public Works Project and was finished in 1937. A addition to the library was completed in 1974. In 2005, the Columbia County Rural Library District was approved by rural voters. In 2008, the Library District took over management of the Dayton Library and in 2009 the City of Dayton was annexed into the Library District.
