On May 2 1806, the Lewis & Clark Expedition passed through the future site of Dayton on their return trip. By 1872 the town had been platted, named, and the post office was established. Between 1880 and 1910, prosperous business men built many large impressive homes and today 90 homes are in two historic districts on the National Register of Historic Places and nearly 30 buildings in the downtown historic district. The current population of Dayton is about 2600.
