This elevation mark is located at the summit of Paulina Peak. The original benchmark at the summit was set in 1933 in bedrock beneath the fire lookout on the summit. The NGS PID for the original benchmark was PB0696. In 1958 a road was built to the summit by the U.S. Air Force for a radar station. The radar tower collapsed the first winter due to ice. In 1968 the fire lookout was removed. The original benchmark lasted for many years and was finally destroyed by vandals in 2004.
In 2002, USGS scientists from the Cascade Volcanoes Observatory did a baseline GPS survey of many of the benchmarks on and around Newberry (including PB0696) to establish a monitoring network to watch for evidence of uplift due to volcanic activity. In 2009, the USGS ran another GPS survey of the network. Since PB0696 had been destroyed, this new elevation mark PAUL was established in as near as possible to the same location.
This is truely one of the best viewpoints in the state of Oregon. At an elevation of almost 8000 feet it can be reached by any automobile. The view extends from Mt. Adams in Washington south to Mt. Shasta in California. The the volcanic features are outstanding. If you are interested in the geology of the area find a copy of Roadside Guide to the Geology of Newberry Volcano.
