Burke Street Wharf, originally named "Goods Wharf", was built with wooden decking and piles in 1900. it started at Brown's Road but as land was reclaimed receded to Bruke Street. As the main passenger and cargo wharf for Thames, continual dredging kept the water depth sufficient to allow extended use either side of high tide. Lines of Hansom cabs waiting to convey passengers to the nearby hotels, were a common sight.
