FZ2178 - HAYTER KNOB LOOKOUT TOWER - Virginia - U.S. Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

No description in NGS database, so will attempt to provide one here. Coordinates were taken from horizontal center of the tower at the concrete base for the steps (bottom set now removed) which indicate a May 1930 construction date. The 4208' elevation marked on the topo map and on a low beam at the tower agreed well with a pair of GPSr units. The tower appears to be in good condition with some new bolts being added.

The firetower is now located in The Channels Nature Area Preserve which was created in 2008 by Commonwealth of Virginia to protect a unique sandstone formation located 100 feet east. Primary access is from Brumley Gap Road with a 5.5 mile hike up to the high point. A more common route is just over three mile hike in from VA80 at Hayter Gap on dirt private, then forest service roads (but prior permission needed from landowner).
