For gallant conduct during campaigns and engagements with Apaches during 1872-73
Corporal Richard Earl Bush
First Battalion Fourth Marines, Sixth Marine Division
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity during the final assaul against the Jamanese forces on Mt Yaetake, Okinawa, April 16, 1945. Corporal Bush continued to lead his squad forward although painfully wounded, refusing to go to the rear until ordered to do so. Although prostrate under medical treatment. He unhesitatingly seized a Japanese hand grenade that had been tossed amongst the wounded and absorbed the explosion with his own body, thus saving his comrades.
Erected by the Veterans of Barren County as a reminder of their heroism and self-sacrifice
