The institution now known as The University of Akron was founded as Buchtel College in 1870 by the Ohio Universalist Convention, which was strongly influenced by the efforts, energy and financial support of Akronites, particularly industrialist John R. Buchtel. On December 20, 1899, the original Buchtel College building burnt to the ground. In June 1901, the current Buchtel Hall was dedicated. Buchtel Hall was totally destroyed by fire in the spring of 1971. The only remains were that of the brick exterior. It was basically a shell. The interior was completely gutted and replaced starting with steel girders.
