St.Mary's church at Whitby stands at the edge of East cliff,it is reached by a long steep climb of stone steps known as the "199 steps"
The ancient church has many interesting features, including a triple decker pulpit,an Elizabethan communion table and box pews which were installed in the 1600's.
Amongst the box pews is a large coal fired stove which heats the church and as we found on our visit is most welcoming on a freezing March day.
The church was built between the years of 1110 and 1120.
The roof was re built in 1819.
Admission to the church is by donation.
