St.Mary's church at Lastingham was founded by Cedric of Lindisfarne in AD654 the present building is an early Norman church and was begun in 1078 on or very near the site of the 7th. century monastery.
St.Mary's has been a parish church since 1228.
The church has a fascinating ancient crypt and is the only aspidal crypt in Britain to have a chancel, nave and side aisles, the stone for the crypt columns is thought to be constructed of re-used Saxon masonry.
The crypt along with the church itself is open to the public.
The crypt has survived totally unaltered over the centuries, the church itself has had little restoration, apart from a tower being added in the 15th.century and some restoration in 1834 and 1839 when the magnificent stone vaulted roof was added.
