This stadium was originally constructed in 1941 as a joint project of the Houston Independent School District and the Works Progress Administration. It began as Houston Public School Stadium, then became Jeppesen Stadium and in 1980, Robertson Stadium. Massive renovation took place in 1999, thanks to a $6 million gift from the John and Julie O'Quinn Foundation. As a tribute for the gift, the official name is now The John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium although it is still commonly referred to as just Robertson Stadium.
During the summer of 2006, Robertson also became the home of the Houston Dynamo, a Major League Soccer franchise.
