The Elizabeth Allen Sopris Memorial was donated by Simpson T. Sopris in honor of his mother, Elizabeth Allen Sopris, who was the wife of Mayor Richard Sopris. The display was donated in 1925. The Sopris family has strong ties to the early growth of Colorado and Denver. For more information, visit (

City Park was Denver's first park, created by Mayor Richard Sopris in the 1870s to be the east side's counterpart to Sloan's Lake. And contrary to Wash Park centric opinion, City Park is, in fact, Denver's largest. This area of rose garden and monument was improved with a grant from Starbucks Coffee "Passion for Parks" in 2007. The memorial was cleaned, but not repaired. The gnomen on the sundial is missing. For more information, visit (
