The State of Michigan Historic Preservation website at (
visit link) tells us:
"The Floyd Mechem house is an irregularly massed three story, frame building, which features a combinations of hip and gable roofs. The building has clapboard siding with shingle siding in the gable ends. The windows are generally one over one double hung units. The front elevation includes two picture windows with leaded glass transoms. The interior retains original birds-eye maple paneling, original plaster and original maple and oak flooring.
The Floyd Mechem house is part of a small nucleus of large distinguished faculty homes built in the late 19th century. The neighborhood was developed by Olivia Hall to meet the growing need for faculty and staff housing associated with the University of Michigan. The house built in 1898 was the residence of distinguished law professor Floyd Mechem during his 12 years at the University. Joseph A. Bursley, the first Dean of Students, lived in the house from 1921 until WWI when he left the U of M to become the chief of instruction in the administrative bureau of the ordnance department. In the mid 1930s the house was used as the first Woman's League on campus."
