The Père Lachaise Crematory (Crematorium du Père Lachaise), a French Historic Monument, is the oldest, most prestigious and largest crematory in France. The Crematory was for long time the only building of its kind at French territory.
The Crematory, beautiful (and unusual in style) piece of funeral archicteture, is composed of a chapel in neo-Byzantine style surrounded by columbarium, where are deposited the urns containing the ashes. The Crematory, designed by architect Jean Camille Formigé, was build in the late XIXth century (1887-1888). The first cremation was done there in 1889. Since then, Crematory was several times reconstructed and modernized. The last renovation (2007-2008) resulted in a newly designed ceremonial hall and also in use of the state-of-art technology for combustion gases treatment and purification.
