This tram was built in the early 1900s to transport salt from the Saline Valley of Eastern California over the Inyo Mountains to the shores of what was once Owens Lake (now dry). The salt wast transported in large buckets by a cable system similar to a modern day ski lift up and over the mountains. Much of the structure remains along with the Transfer Station at the top of the mountain. The Transfer Station can be reached with a 4 Wheel Drive Vehicle via the Swansea to Cerro Gordo Trail. The trailhead is approximately 10 miles east of Lone Pine California.
