The Michigan Historical Preservation website at (
visit link) tells us:
"The house is a large and rambling, two-story, red-brick, Late Victorian, structure set on a coursed ashlar foundation. A two-brick-high belt course at window-lintel level in each story is constructed of yellow brick. Bracketed cornices crown the square-plan bay window units and the two side porches near the front of the house. An entrance was constructed in 1937 after the house had been divided into apartments.
The Jacob Hoffstetter House is one of the most substantial and handsomely detailed of Ann Arbor's numerous 1880s houses. The eclectic style does not conform to any revival style and can only be labeled Late Victorian. One of few houses surviving the expansion of downtown Ann Arbor, the Hoffstetter House is one of the best preserved homes in the downtown area. "
