This exceptional early-Art-Deco structure (the first finished art-deco skyscraper) is a work of architects Raymond Hood and André Fouilhoux. The building was built for American Radiator and completed in 1924.
The architects combined Gothic and modern styles in the design of the building. Black brick on the facade of the building (symbol of coal) was selected to give an idea of solidity and to give the building a solid mass. Other parts of the facade were covered in gold bricks (symbol of fire), and the entry was decorated with marble and black mirrors. American Radiator Building is now the Bryant Park Hotel. It is located at 40 West 40th Street with the front facing the Bryant park. American Radiator Building is the first building in New York City which gained official landmark status.
