Born in Stanley, NC in 1932, Graham was graduated from Wake Forest University in 1953 ith studies in General Science, Music and English. He studied concert repertoire under Edwin Hughs in the summer of 1952 expanding his interest in the piano. In the autumn of 1953 he began his studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. Here, inspired by the teachings of Eric Rust, he became interested in the apology of science and religion and enrolled at the Medical College of Virginia. He received his doctorate of medicine in 1960. In the later sixties he became interested in the visual arts and began to concentrate on sculpture. Still, engaged full time in Family Practice, he returned to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to study toward a degree in Creative Art. He spent some time at the Art Student’s League in New York , studying under Robert Beverly Hale, Sidney Simon, Anthony Polumbo and Nathaniel Kaz. He received his degree from UNCC in 1980.

His work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States. Among his major works are Queen Charlotte Walks in Her Garden (a life-size bronze of the consort to George III which is at the corner of 5TH and College in Charlotte, NC.), and the one and one-half times life size bronze of a mourning police officer in York, SC --The Law Enforcement Memorial. In 1992 he began a long series of liturgical sculptures for the United House of Prayer for All People. His Sweet Blessing Angel has achieved national attention and has been featured in an exhibition at the Anacostia Museum of the Smithsonian where it is a part of their permanent collection. In addition to its being featured at the Speak To My Heart Exhibition at the Arts and Industry Building of the Smithsonina from 1997 to 2001, it was featured in the 1997 Smithsonian engagement Calendar. The Sweet Blessing Angel ‘s African-American image in gold fiberglass may be seen atop their churches from Los Angeles to Boston and from Miami to Seattle, and many cities in between throughout the United States. It has been widely reviewed in many newspapers and recently received recognition in the extensive review of the Charlotte Mission of the United House of Prayer in the Washington Post on August 31,1996. The present exhibition at the Arts and Industry Building of the Smithsonian featured the angel as the “center of the exhibition, “Speak to My Heart” which was installed May of 1998 and will be up until March of 2000. One and one-half times life-size bust of Bishop Madison, Bishop McCollough and Bishop Grace are installed at the Beaties Ford Church in Charlotte, NC and The Returning Dove, ten feet tall and fourteen feet wide is installed on the front of the Statesville Road Church. Here I Stand was dedicated in 2001 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stanley, his home town. Here, of stainless steel and bronze, he as depicted Martin Luther nailing the theses on the door of Wittenbury Cathedral. The Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens commissioned Graham to create Laura for the White Garden. Graham most recent work was commissioned by USA Swimming from the Olympic Center in Colorado Springs to create the Golden Goggle Award to be presented to the outstanding American swimmers.

Graham has won numerous awards and his works are featured in many public and private collections. His miniatures of the Queen Charlotte are in collections at Kew Gardens and Queen Charlotte Hospital in London. There is a casting on board the USS Charlotte nuclear submarine and in the Mirow Castle, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany.

Although no longer living in his small home-town, but still involved in Family Practice, Graham enjoys combining his interwoven life into his sculpture, and other mediums of expression.
