Marker Name: A9 - G.W. Horner Building
Marker Text: G.W. Horner commissioned the construction of this unique brick building as a business investment. Facts about the place are sketchy, but it is best remembered as “Workingmen’s Family Supplies,” which was likely operated by S.C. Caldwell, Bend’s first fire chief.
The Caldwells came to Bend from Albany, travelling over Santiam Pass in 1905. Caldwell’s daughter Ruth was the frist woman hired by the Shevlin-Hixon Company.
