Ehrhardt Park was originally purchased by the City in 1977 and dedicated in honor of Walter Ehrhardt on May 5, 1984.

Mr. Ehrhardt, a native of Illinois, was a U.S. Army engineer in World Was I who relocated to Tempe in 1929 to take up farming. An active member of the Tempe American Legion Post, Ehrhardt organized the first American Legion baseball team at Tempe High School in the 1930’s and later became the state commissioner overseeing 65 teams with over 1,200 players.

Ehrhardt became an honorary life member of the American Legion and received the organization’s Americanism Award for his work with youth, particularly the Legion’s baseball program. He also established the Hall of Flags in the Legion’s Tempe Post and was an active member in many community activities and organizations prior to his death in 1969.
