A plaque at the base of the sculpture reads as follows:
The Beacon
Robert Klippel
The gift of James Fairfax to the people
of Sydney to commemorate the
Sesquincentenary of Sydney in 1992.
From the International Sculpture Center website:
The Beacon (1988) has a very strong presence, towering above the spectator, the smaller colored forms encased within the black structure, capped with a directional triangular shape.
From the Sydney Art Ride 2008:
“The Beacon” - Robert Klippell, First Fleet Park, Circular Quay. “...By the time Klippel returned to Sydney in 1950, he was committed to construction as a method of working and was producing totally abstract sculptures, which may have been appreciated by his fellow artists but did not sell well in a relatively conservative postwar society. Forced to work full-time, his production dropped to a mere 18 pieces between 1950 and 1957. But there were significant developments. He continued to produce works on paper, which are limited in size but among the best abstract expressionist paintings produced in Australia at this time...”
From Wikipedia:
Sydney is the largest city in Australia, and the state capital of New South Wales. Sydney has a metropolitan area population of approximately 4.4 million and an area of approximately 12,000 square kilometres (4,633 sq mi).
On 20 July 1842 the municipal council of Sydney was incorporated and the town was declared the first city in Australia, with John Hosking the first elected mayor. The first of several Australian gold rushes started in 1851, and the port of Sydney has since seen many waves of people arriving from around the world.
