Kurth Kiln was completed in 1942 and at that time was the only continuously operating charcoal kiln in Australia. It had a capacity of 25 tonnes of billets which was topped up every two hours and produced three tonnes of charcoal every 24 hours. Charcoal was used in motor vehicles as a substitute for petrol during the war. A 6 shilling bag would last up to 100km. Once the war ended, Kurth Kiln was decommisioned in 1946.
The Friends of Kurth Kiln manage the site and have resored a lot of the original structures around the kiln.
