Beginning in 1905 the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad began a western ward expansion to Seattle, Washington which was completed in 1908. The railroad operated until 1980 when the company went into bankruptcy. The State of Washington acquired the entire right of way within the State. The entire route is known as the John Wayne Pioneer Trail. A hundred plus mile section of the right of way is now the Iron Horse State Park and has been developed with trailheads. This section is open to hikers, bicyclists, equestrians and skiers in the winter.
At the community of Kittitas there is a historic railroad depot and the Kittitas Trailhead.
