New Zealand has very few roadside shrines, but these sacred falls are an exception. Their water was pronounced to have special healing powers and the falls were declared sacred and named by local Maori as Te Whaeao te Rere. A vision of the Madonna was claimed some years ago, and later others reported to have seen visions of a angel above the falls. The site was blessed by a local "Prophet" in 1975.
For many years this spot beside the busy country SH.4. main road has been a stopping place for those who believe that this water falling from a hillside spring has special healing powers. A shrine has been set up, decorated with flowers, hanging charms and other colourful mementos, placed by the local Maori people who frequently stop to sprinkle water on themselves. A metal pipe contraption has been placed under the falls to enable people to collect the water in containers.
