In 1912, the Women’s Association of Goldendale raised $800 to purchase three adjoining lots on W. Burgen Street for a local library and the city council passed an ordinance to fund the operation and maintainence of a library. The Pittsburgh philanthropist Andrew Carnegie provided $8,000 to build the library. The library is a one-story Colonial style brick building which was designed by the firm of Doyle and Patterson of Portland, Oregon. The building was built by the Portland firm of Stebinger Brothers. The Goldendale Free Public Library opened on March 1, 1915. In 1973, the Library became part of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library system. In 1982, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 1985 the Library was remodeled and expanded with the addition of two new wings.
