Po nástupu nacistu k moci vzniklo nekolik dobrovolnických organizací, které pomáhaly pronásledovaným a diskriminovaným emigrovat z Nemecka a pozdeji i z Rakouska a z odstoupených cástí Ceskoslovenska. Pomoc spocívala jak v poskytování financní apod. pomoci, tak i ve vyjednávání s úrady státu, které byly ochotné uprchlíky prijmout a kterých v prípade židovské emigrace opravdu nebylo mnoho. Hned nekolik takových organizací bylo založeno z iniciativy kvakerské církve, mezi jinými i Britský výbor pro uprchlíky z Ceskoslovenska (British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia, BCRC). Po krištálové noci si v techto organizacích uvedomili, že Židé pod vládou nacistu jsou v prímém ohrožení života a upravili svoji taktiku – namísto záchrany celých rodin se snažili dostat ze zeme alespon deti tím, že jim našli adoptivní britské rodiny.

V prosinci 1938 ucitel Martin Blake, jeden z pracovníku BCRC, požádal svého prítele Nicholase Wintona, který se zrovna chystal na dovolenou do švýcarských Alp, aby namísto lyžování odjel do Prahy a pomohl pražské kancelári BCRC, organizovat detské transporty. Pro každé díte do veku 17 let bylo nutné získat náhradní rodinu v Británii a kauci ve výši asi 50 liber, potom již nebyl problém získat pro ne britské vízum a povolení k pobytu. Byla založena Detská sekce BCRC, kterou rídil Winton z Londýna, kde s pomocí své matky a nekolika dalších dobrovolníku vyhledával adoptivní rodice, vyrizoval adopce u britských úradu a získával príspevky na kauce. To všechno vedle své normální práce. V Praze mezitím Trevor Chadwick, nový vedoucí pražské pobocky BCRC, shromaždoval potrebné dokumenty od rodicu, kterí meli zájem poslat své díte do Anglie, a vyrizoval u nemeckých okupacních úradu povolení k vycestování. První Kindertransport (detský transport) z Prahy byl vypraven 14. brezna 1939 s pouhými dvaceti detmi. Nejpocetnejší byly transporty cervencové (každý více než 100–200 detí). Casto se jednalo o deti židovských uprchlíku z Nemecka a Rakouska, kterí pred mnichovskou dohodou hledali azyl v Ceskoslovensku, a více než ceští Židé si uvedomovali závažnost nacistického nebezpecí a soucasne už casto nemeli dost prostredku, aby mohli vycestovat spolu s detmi (kauce za dospelého byla 200 liber, nehlede na to, že získat vízum uprchlíka bylo mnohem složitejší, než vízum pro díte adoptované v Anglii). Poslední detský transport byl vypraven 2. srpna 1939, kdy celkový pocet zachránených detí dosáhl 669.

Za své nejsmutnejší zážitky z té doby Winton považuje dojmy z uteceneckých táboru, kde byli lidé z obsazeného pohranicí, a ješte horší prý byla chvíle, když se dozvedel, že poslední transport 1. zárí, který mel být nejpocetnejší, už nevyjede. Z detí, které jím mely odjet, vetšina holocaust neprežila.

Sochy socharky Flor Kent odhalene 1.9.2009 stoji na 1.nastupisti v mistech, kde rodice mavali svym odjizdejicim detem a kde se videli naposledy. V teto chvili vlak nabere mirnou levetocivou zatacku a uz neni mozno spatrit pasazery ve vlaku.

Before Christmas 1938, Winton was about to fly to Switzerland for a ski vacation when he decided to travel to Prague instead to help a friend who was involved in Jewish refugee work. There he single-handledy established an organization to aid Jewish children from Czechoslovakia separated from their families by the Nazis. He set up an office at a dining room table in his hotel in Wenceslas Square. In November 1938, shortly after Kristallnacht, the House of Commons of the United Kingdom had approved a measure that would permit the entry of refugees younger than 17 years old into England if they had a place to stay and a warranty of 50 pounds sterling was deposited for a return ticket for their eventual return to their country of origin. Winton found homes for 669 children, many of whose parents perished in Auschwitz. Throughout the summer, he placed advertisements seeking families to take them in. The last group, which left Prague on 3 September 1939, was sent back because the Nazis had invaded Poland, marking the start of World War II. During the war he served in the Administrative and Special Duties Branch of the Royal Air Force, initially as an airman, rising to sergeant by the time he was commissioned as an acting pilot officer on probation on 22 June 1944. He was promoted to war substantive flying officer on 17 February 1945. He retained his commission until 19 May 1954 when he relinquished it, retaining the rank of flight lieutenant.

Winton kept his humanitarian exploits under wraps for many years until his wife Greta found a detailed scrapbook in the attic in 1988. The scrapbook contained lists of the children, including their parents' names, and the names and addresses of the families that took them in. After sending letters to these addresses, 80 of "Winton's children" were found in Britain. The world found out about Winton's work in 1988 on a television programme titled That's Life! when Winton was invited to be an audience member. At one point during the programme Winton's scrapbook was shown, and his achievements explained. The host of the programme then asked if there was anyone in the audience who owed their lives to Winton and if so to stand - at which point over 2 dozen audience members surrounding Winton rose and applauded.

From this point track takes small left bend and it is not possible to see passengers in the train.
