Wolfgottesacker was established in 1872. After a year plans to build a switch yard in the area became public; the funerals were stopped in 1874 by way of precaution. In the end the cemetery had to give up substantial parts of the area in the North, but areas in the Southeast and Southwest were added. This destroyed the carefulley planned structure of the area, that originally had the ground plan of a medieval church. From 1879 until 1932 - when the new central cemetery "Hörnli" opened - it was the main cemetery of Basel. Since then there were less funerals at the location. From 1980 it is exclusively used for family graves. Currently there are about 150 funerals each year.

A scientific inspection counted 1130 graves from 1872 to 1930. About half of them are considered to be objects of cultural value and are protected by law. There are no numbers available about later graves, it could be about 4000.
