Samuel Mannix was born in Ireland in 1864. He was the 3rd Archbishop of Melbourne from 1917-1963. This Statue stands in the grounds of St Patrick's Catholic Church in Melbourne.

He encouraged people to participate in public life, opposed conscription in the first world war, supported migrant communities, opposed the white Australia policy, rejected capital punishment and condemned the atomic bomb attacks on Japan.
The statue was unveiled on March 14th 1999. The sculptor was Nigel Boonham.
