Triangle Lake was formed by a large prehistoric landslide which blocked the Lake Creek drainage to form the lake. Today the creek cascades down tilted bedrock slabs from the slide to form what is known as Lake Creek Falls. In 1989, the BLM constructed three fish passage structures to allow salmon and steelhead to access more than 100 miles of upstream habitat for spawning. As part of this project this stairway was built to provide safe access to the falls which have been a popular swimming site since the early 1900s. The stairway contains a 102 steps in three segments separated by small landings where the direction of the stairway changes.
