In Williamsburg, just south of the section called Colonial Williamsburg, is a hotel that has recently been reopened after several years of renovation that is called the Williamsburg Lodge. This lodge was one of two hotels in the original plan envisioned by John D. Rockefeller in the 1930s when he began the monumental work of restoring the many buildings in this city to colonial era appearances.
Williamsburg Lodge is on South England Street, just off Francis Street. The entrance is a circular driveway that is bounded by the inn on three sides. The lodge is a large rambling complex of buildings, mostly interconnected.
When you enter the place through the main entrance, you first pass through the hall that runs the width of the hall. If you go left, you end up at the lounge area where there is a nice set up with a bar-tender, chairs and a TV. If you go right, there is a gift shop, then the corridor that takes you to the restaurant. Straight ahead is the sizable hotel lobby. Beyond the lobby are the conference rooms where functions are held or business meetings.
Hotel rooms are well-kept with modern facilities. The room I stayed in had wood paneling and was decorated with American folk-art objects and paintings. It also had a TV and a private bathroom, so it isn't THAT rustic! There may be some differences in the appearances of the rooms from building to building.
The hotel has many facilities on its property or nearby, shared by the other lodges and inns of Colonial Williamsburg. There is the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course, which as 45 holes to play on. There is the Spa of Colonial Williamsburg. There is a pool. There are tennis facilities. And, of course, there is the Colonial Williamsburg historic area (the museum of restored houses and other buildings.
The restaurant is spacious and attended by very friendly staff. We had breakfast there. The prices are a bit steep - in Nov. 2009, the full continental breakfast that included eggs and meats was $15, while without the eggs and meats, it was $11. But the food was very good.
Lodging prices are on the moderate side. We took the package that had 3 days-two nights at $299, which included $100 gift card to spend in Colonial Williamsburg or at the restaurant (it goes fast). Check the web site for the latest offerings.
As a destination for a honeymoon, it was perfect!

Noteworthy facilities/attractions: The hotel has nice rooms, many of which have wood paneling that have an old room feel to them; a nice eating establishment with a full breakfast offering; good conference room facilities, access to a golf course and spa, and has special package deals with Colonial Williamsburg.
Justification for Recommendation: The hotel had very helpful and courteous desk and porter staff. They helped us get oriented to the area and provided tips how to reserve activities at Colonial Williamsburg. The facilities were well kept.
