Roving around for geocache smiles
We've seen lots of sights across the miles
Here is one that's worth a read:
A.P. was loved, and to him, Godspeed.
As part of the Oakalla VFD sign, there is a pillar with two plaques (one with text and the other with an etching of A.P.), behind which hangs a cast iron skillet. The inscription tells the tale:
Plaque is part of the (new) Oakalla VFD sign and reads:
In Memory of Arthur Paul "AP Smith"
March 3, 1935 to March 14, 2008
"What we have once enjoyed we can never lose;
All that we love deeply, becomes a part of us."
Helen Keller
This cast iron skillet was auctioned off in memory of A.P. Smith, for $4500.00 at the Oakalla V.F.D. Fish Fry in June 2008. A.P. was a life long member of the Oakalla Volunteer Fire Department and a pillar of the Oakalla Community. He was full of knowledge, a wonderful friend and family man and very involved in this community. Every year A.P. would contribute a cast iron pot or skillet to the auction to help raise money for the fire department. After he passed away in March of 2008, the fire department members purchased this skillet. It was auctioned off and resold 14 times. The proceeds were used to purchase this sign.
