After deer was introduced to the wild in the 1800s enormous enviornmental damage happened throughout the high country. Starting in the 1950s deer was hunted or removed to be farmed. This memorial remembers the many people who died in this process.

TO THE ENDURING MEMORY

Of all those hunters and pilots of the deer recovery and venison industry who lost their lives in the North and South Island high county during the last great hunt in human history.

It all began here in The Haast in 1959 and now the mountain quietudes are there are their silent song and requiem
