There are three sundials by Zarbula in 1872 in Borgata Sestriere, Piemonte, Italy. This one has been repainted reasonably well.

The old alpine village and hamlets of Sestriere are now an extended ski town, greatly developed for the 2006 Olympics. Sestriere was the venue for several events in the Olympics. The old houses, now converted into ski vacation condos still link to the patrimony through things like the architecture and features like Zarbula's sundials.

This sundial is a better restoration than the one just down the lane. It lacks the subtle colours and artistry of the original but is is a reasonably good repainting of Zarbula's 1872 sundial. The hourlines are correct. The Zarbula folk art style elements have been preserved: chicken, flower pots, frame curtain, sun moon, Masonic symbol, signed ZGF, dated 1872. There is an equatorial line and the gnomon seems a bit off a right angle to it but this could be perspective as these photos have been edited and corrected.

The motto is one of my favourites. "Ora ne te rapiat ora". It only makes sense when written to add h to make the last word hora. My free translation of the Latin motto is "Pray for the opportunities that you could have seized" This comes back to my philosophy of life, "Carpe Diem", Seize the opportunity, Go for it! Thank you Zarbula in so many ways.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
