Dune City is located on the shores of Siltcoos and Woahink Lakes which were caused by the damming of several drainages by the large coastal dune field. In the late 1950’s the National Park Service began to planning to acquire lands for a proposed Oregon Dunes National Seashore. Many property owners in the area were worried about the use of eminent domain to acquire their lands. To prevent this they voted to incorporate as a city and established Dunes City in 1963. The city is run by a volunteer committee.
The National Seashore was never established but there is now the Oregon National Dunes Recreation Area administered by the USDA Forest Service.
