As the sign explains, this prototype granite bowling lane was created in the late Fifties to explore the commercial potential. A few facilities did install granite lanes, but the idea obviously never took off. Not mentioned in the sign is that fact that the surface does not grip a ball the way wood does.

The prototype fell into disrepair, but has been restored for employees and visitors to enjoy (typically as they wait for the factory tour to start).
