Settled in 1685, the City of Burlington was once the Capital of West Jersey and third largest port in the New World. Historic buildings and artifacts dating back to the 17th century can be seen by visitors.

In 1849, the "Hope Hose Company" opened by the waterfront. An act of legislature changed the name to the present "Hope Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1" in 1872.

The weathervane that sits on the domed steeple is a depiction of the horse-drawn fire wagons used when the fire company first served this historic port towne.
