After roughly 140 years as a lumbering then farming community this quaint little town on the banks of the South Nation river was finally abandoned in a few years leading up to 1991. Situated over sensitive clay soils or Leda clays which are unique to Eastern Ontario and known to liquify with little warning when disturbed. With similar landslides of varying magnitudes in other areas, some with fatalities, the decision was made to move the town.
The huge landslide a few years later, at the very edge of where the town once stood, proved that the decision to move was the right one made just in time.
Today all that remains is the plaque and some seasonal information boards maintained by local school kids, where the church once stood. The only other notable feature is the huge void in the landscape where the landslide took place (45.24.044 075.03.215).
