This prison was known as a "penitentiary" (from the Latin word for remorse).
The Quakers believed that through reflection and repentance, inmates would give up crime and leave prison rehabilitated, If it where that easy!!!

Marker Text: Stood just east of here, 1775-1838. It extended from Walnut to Locust Streets. Here were held debtors, felons, Tories, and prisoners of war. From the prison yard, Jean Pierre Blanchard made the first air voyage in America, 1793.
