Kiosk on Bandon Riverwalk with three history signs about Bandon.
Marker Name: Early Bandon: a little town on top of a river
Marker Text: Most of the early town was built on piers out over the muddy tidal flats.
Where you are now standing was once in the middle of a mudflat!
Bandon began its history taking full advantage of the Coquille River’s opportunities. Rather than clearing the thick forest to make way for the town, it was easier to build on top of the river. And, in the days before roads, businesses could pull boats right up to the buildings and load up their wares for transport
1853 - First settlers establish present townsite
1859 - Hopes soar for Bandon’s future as a commercial port when the first tall ship “Twin Sisters” sails into the Coquille River.
1874 - Town is named Bandon, after an Irish village.
1877 - Bandon’s Post Office established
1880 - Bandon’s famous cheese making begins. Bandon gets Federal money to build a jetty to aid shipping traffic.
1883 - First sawmill opens, first school is built.
1884 - Works starts on the jetty.
