Moses Williams served as a First Sergeant, Company I, 9th U.S. Cavalry at the foothills of the Cuchillo Negro Mountains, New Mexico. On August 16, 1881, he rallied a detachment, skillfully conducted a running fight of three or four hours, and by his coolness, bravery, and unflinching devotion to duty by standing by his commanding officer in an exposed position under heavy fire from a large party of Indians, saved the lives of at least three of his comrades. Citation was issued on November 12, 1896. He was one of 18 African American Buffalo Soldiers that was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions during the Indian Wars. He died August 23, 1899 and was buried at Vancouver's Post Military Cemetery in Plot: 8W-393.
