Construction on the United States Capitol started in 1793, and the first meeting of the meeting of Congress occurred in 1800. Since then, the Capitol has served as the home to the Senate and House of Representatives where all United States laws are created. In the 1850s, expansions were made on the north and south wings to accommodate the westward growth of the country.

Free tours are available by meeting in the new visitor's center in the rear of the building. Reservations must be made ahead of time. This tour is pretty limited, covering the rotunda, crypt and original meeting place of the House of Representatives. A further, more in-depth tour is available of either the House of Senate chambers by contacting your Congressman ahead of time and arranging for a tour. Throughout the public areas of the Capitol are 100 figurative statues, two per state. Each state decides which statues to have on display, usually with some historical connection to the state's past.
