Purvis, MS, the county seat of Lamar County, was founded in 1884 on property granted to the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad by Thomas Melville Purves, it began as a depot on the railroad and experienced growth through the time industry. In 1904, Lamar County was created from Marion County and Purvis was named the county seat. As of 2000 the population was 2,164.
