According to this website, "James Whallon settled here in 1804 (one year after Ohio was
admitted to the Union). He built this house around 1816 with
bricks fired on the property. He was a farmer, a Justice
of the Peace, and he ran a distillery. Whallon and his
wife Sarah(sic-Ollie)raised thirteen children and
lived in the house until the 1840's. Subsequently
wned by several families, it was purchased from the
Marquardt family in 1936 by the Resettlement
Administration. Presently owned by the village,
the house is listed on The National Register
of Historic Places."
